Welch & Wright Attorneys at Law partners with Piece Be With You to deliver firearms education weeks before new laws take effect

NORFOLK, VA – May 15, 2026 — With major changes to Virginia gun law set to take effect July 1, 2026, Welch & Wright, PLLC, a Norfolk-based law firm with a dedicated firearms law practice, will host a Virginia and Utah concealed carry permit class on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at its offices at 716 W. 20th Street, Norfolk, VA 23517. The 4.5-hour class is taught by certified instructor Jay Hermoso of Piece Be With You, and pairs hands-on firearms training with the legal context most gun owners never get until they need it.

The class arrives two weeks before a package of new firearms laws is set to take effect across the Commonwealth. Among the most significant: a ban on future sales of assault firearms and possession of magazines holding more than 15 rounds (HB217/SB749), a measure raising the minimum age to purchase a handgun or assault firearm from 18 to 21 and restoring universal background checks on private sales (HB1525), and a new requirement that firearms be safely stored in homes where minors are present (HB871/SB348). The bills do not apply to firearms already owned before the effective date, but the practical implications for purchases, transfers, storage, and carry will reshape how Virginians exercise their Second Amendment rights.

“Knowledge is one of the most important parts of both an effective self-defense and an effective legal defense,” said L. Calum Welch, founding partner of Welch & Wright, whose practice focuses primarily on firearms law. “Things rarely go well for someone that has to learn things the hard way on the street or in a courtroom. And with all the coming changes, it’s more important than ever that Virginians understand the law and how to exercise their constitutionally protected rights. That’s why we’re proud to host a class by Piece Be With You. Jay provides quality education to anyone who wants to safely and legally exercise their Second Amendment rights.”

Welch & Wright defends clients in self-defense and use-of-force cases, handles gun rights restoration petitions, and advises on NFA trusts and concealed carry matters. The June 14 class is part of an ongoing effort to give Virginia gun owners both the firearms training and the legal grounding needed to navigate an increasingly complex regulatory environment.

The course certifies attendees to immediately apply for a Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit, a Utah Non-Resident Concealed Firearm Permit, or both. Hermoso is an NRA-certified firearms instructor, USCCA-certified instructor, and Concealed Firearms Instructor with the State of Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification. The curriculum covers basic handgun safety, gun anatomy, ammunition and fundamentals of pistol shooting, pistol selection and maintenance, Virginia gun laws and the legal use of deadly force, reciprocity between states, and disqualifying criteria for permit applicants.

Seating is limited and demand for the Virginia/Utah combination class is high. Payment in full is required at the time of reservation.
